Cut contour – what is it and how do I create it?

Cut, sleeker, cut contour: If you want your printed products to stand out from the crowd, you can use free forms to create smart, extravagant accents. This article provides tips on how to correctly create a cut contour - also written as cut contour or cut contour - in the various vector graphics programs.

Free forms give printed products an additional dimension that offers plenty of scope for creativity. Modern ground posters , for example, are self-adhesive, robust films that are stuck to the floors of busy shopping centers or train stations. If such floor stickers are designed in individual shapes , it is advertising that is guaranteed to make people stumble. Punched magnetic films and signs in eye-catching shapes are not to be overlooked. And individual free-form stickers are always welcome.

Whether flyers , stickers , magnetic foils , signs or floor stickers , that fall outside the usual grid: Siegelshop.ch prints them in any size and shape, all die-cutting shapes are possible. Even small runs and low quantities without high production costs are no longer a problem with digital printing, as the costs for a die-cutting shape are eliminated.

Create something new: With the cutting contour, you can determine the exact format, shape and appearance you want. Whether it's a star or a drop - the cutting line ensures that the free form fits perfectly.

For example , stickers produced using digital printing in the shape you want, a cutting line - a so-called cut contour or cut contour - is required during printing. This clearly defines how your stickers should be cut. A vectorized contour line is required in the PDF print file for the contour cut. This cutting line must be created in the graphics program as a separate layer with the name "cut contour" (this is how we define it at siegelshop.ch). This makes it possible to recognize the cutting contour during the printing process and edit it accordingly.

The cut contour is of course not visible on the motif after printing. The cutting program only reads the cut contour data as a path for the plotter, not as part of the layout.

The following description shows you in detail how the cutting contour is created in the individual graphics programs.

Creating the cut contour in Adobe Illustrator

In Adobe Illustrator, go to the Swatches window.

Select Color Fields window

Here you select the option “New color field” from the context menu.

Select new color field

The settings of the new color field are made as shown below:
1. Name the color field in the cut contour (make sure it is spelled correctly).
2. Set the color type to “Solid color”.
3. Set magenta to “100%”.

Creating the cut contour in CorelDRAW

In CorelDRAW, select the so-called “Palette Editor” from the “Tools” menu. In the menu selection, select “Custom Spot Colors” and click “Add Color”.

In the Select Color window, click on the Models tab and enter your color values. Select any color and add it to the palette.

Now you have to rename the spot color. To do this, select the chosen color in the "Palette Editor" again. Name your special color "Cut contour" and don't forget to follow the spelling specified by the printer. At Siegelshop.ch, for example, the name is "Cut contour". Click on the "OK" field.

If you now activate the “Custom Spot Colors” palette and the standard CMYK palette in the user palettes via Window and Color Palette and Color Palette Overview, you can easily drag the “Cut Contour” spot color into your standard CMYK palette.

Finally, save your file with cut contour as a printable PDF file.

Creating the cut contour in InDesign

In InDesign, the procedure is the same as in Adobe Illustrator. Here, too, we go to the “Color Swatches” window. Again, a new color swatch is created.

Creating the cut contour in Freehand

In Freehand, you can access the Color Mixer by going to “Window,” then “Panels,” then clicking “Color Mixer.”

Select any color for the cutting contour by moving the CMYK slider, e.g. 100% Cyan.

Now you have to rename the color. Under "Add to color fields" enter "Cut contour" for the selected color. Important: Please make sure you spell it correctly. At Siegelshop.ch, for example, the cut contour is called "Cut contour". In the "Color fields" tab you will now see the special color Cut contour.

Finally, save your file with cut contour as a printable PDF file.
